Mixing AOS-10 Software Versions

In network environments where gateways are deployed, it is recommended that access points (APs) run the same software version as the gateway. However, it is possible, and in some cases necessary, for the gateway and APs to operate on different versions. Such mixing of AOS-10 software versions is supported, as long as the versions of the AP and gateway fall between two consecutive Long Support Releases (LSR Long Supported Release. LSR is the release type tag that helps to identify the maintenace schedule of the software version.). This includes the two LSRs and all Short Support Releases (SSR) between them.

At a given site, AOS-10 APs may run different software versions, though it is recommended that all APs within the same roaming domain operate on the same version. This practice helps minimize any negative experiences for client devices as they move between APs. This recommendation also applies to sites with different AP generations, such as Wi-Fi Wi-Fi is a technology that allows electronic devices to connect to a WLAN network, mainly using the 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz radio bands. Wi-Fi can apply to products that use any 802.11 standard. 5 and Wi-Fi 6 models.

For AOS-10 gateways functioning as nodes within a gateway cluster, all gateways must run the same software version.

Below are examples of supported multi-version deployments:

  • Both the AP and the gateway running AOS-10.4 (LSR).

  • AP running AOS-10.4 (LSR) and gateway running AOS-10.7 (SSR Short Supported Release. SSR is the release type tag that helps to identify the maintenace schedule of the software version.).

This scenario applies to deployments containing older, parked AP models (such as 320 Series) that cannot be upgraded beyond AOS-10.4.

  • AP running AOS-10.5 (SSR) and gateway running AOS-10.4 (LSR), which may occur if a gateway bug prevents an upgrade to a later major version.

  • An AP or gateway running the previous LSR or most recent SSR alongside a gateway or AP running the current LSR.

This scenario allows environments to be upgraded upon the release of a new LSR before the previous LSR reaches its End of Support (EOST). All devices must be upgraded to the new LSR before any are updated beyond it, ensuring compliance with the requirement to keep software versions between two consecutive LSRs.
