Configuring the WAN Uplink

Uplinks connect Microbranch to underlay networks.

To configure a WAN Wide Area Network. WAN is a telecommunications network or computer network that extends over a large geographical distance. interface, complete the following steps:

  1. In the WebUI, set the filter to a Microbranch group that contains at least one AP.

The dashboard context for a group is displayed.

  2. Under Manage, click Devices > Access Points.

  3. Click the Config icon.

The Microbranch group configuration page is displayed.

  4. In the WAN card, click WAN Uplink.

The WAN uplink page is displayed. This section defines uplink interfaces by creating WAN-facing VLANs Virtual Local Area Network. In computer networking, a single Layer 2 network may be partitioned to create multiple distinct broadcast domains, which are mutually isolated so that packets can only pass between them through one or more routers; such a domain is referred to as a Virtual Local Area Network, Virtual LAN, or VLAN., labeling them as uplink interfaces, and assigning them to the required uplink ports.

  5. To add a WAN port, click the + icon in the WAN Uplinks table.

The Add Uplink page is displayed.

  6. To configure an uplink, enter details for the parameters provided in the following table.

    Table 1: WAN Parameters

    WAN Type

    Parameters

    Description

    -

    WAN Type

Specify one of the following connection types:

    By default, INET is selected.

NOTE: Classic Central creates a wired profile when Ethernet Ethernet is a network protocol for data transmission over LAN. uplink (eth0 or eth1) is added as one of the uplink profiles. For more information of wired profiles, refer Configuring Port Profiles.

    INET

    Uplink Name

Specify the name of the uplink.

    VLAN

Specify the VLAN ID that you want to assign to the uplink. By default, this is set to 4092 or 4093 based on availability.

NOTE: The valid VLAN IDs range 2–4093, except 3333.

    Speed

Configure the uplink speed to optimize performance.

Range of values is 10–5000 Mbps.

If not set, the WAN uplink speed defaults to auto-negotiated port speed for INET, LTE, and MPLS. Based on the speed and bandwidth threshold allowed for an uplink, Microbranch assigns the session traffic.

    Use as backup

Enable this option if you want to use the uplink in the standby mode.

By default, only one uplink operates as an active uplink. While configuring the first uplink, this option is disabled. While configuring the second uplink, this option is enabled.

NOTE: This option is disabled while editing the existing uplink configuration.

    IP addressing method

Select one of the following options:

    Port assignment

Assign an available port for the uplink. For Ethernet, maximum of two ports can be assigned. The already assigned ports are not available for selection in the drop-down list.

    LTE

    Type

To configure a 3G Third Generation of Wireless Mobile Telecommunications Technology. See W-CDMA. or 4G Fourth Generation of Wireless Mobile Telecommunications Technology. See LTE. uplink manually, select Aruba USB Universal Serial Bus. USB is a connection standard that offers a common interface for communication between the external devices and a computer. USB is the most common port used in the client devices.  LTE as the modem type.

    Access point name (APN)

Enter the name of the Access Point to which the uplink connects.

Public land Mobile Network (PLMN Public Land Mobile Network. PLMS is a network established and operated by an administration or by a Recognized Operating Agency for the specific purpose of providing land mobile telecommunications services to the public.)

Select Auto or Manual for the PLMN. If you have selected Manual, enter the PLMN ID in the text box.

    By default, Auto is selected.

    Mode

Select one of the following network modes:

Enable GPS Global Positioning System. A satellite-based global navigation system.

To enable GPS, select the check box.

    Sim Slot

Select SIM Subscriber Identity Module. SIM is an integrated circuit that is intended to securely store the International Mobile Subscriber Identity (IMSI) number and its related key, which are used for identifying and authenticating subscribers on mobile telephony devices. slot 1, 2, or Auto.

    By default, Auto is selected.

    Use as backup

Enable this option if you want to use the uplink in the standby mode.

  • Microbranch supports a total of two uplinks which include two wired uplinks and a combination of one wired uplink and one cellular uplink. The uplink configuration works in APs in the Microbranch group with ArubaOS 10.3 or later versions.

  • A cellular uplink (4G/5G) can be configured as the primary uplink only if it is the sole uplink, with no other secondary uplink. Otherwise, it must be configured as a secondary uplink.
