Gateway Clustering Profile

A gateway cluster is a group of multiple gateways operating as a single unit to ensure high availability and traffic continuity in a network. By clustering gateways, networks gain full redundancy so that APs, WLAN clients, and other connected devices can operate smoothly even in the event of a failover. The Gateway Clustering Profile under the High Availability card allows you to configure and manage gateway clusters efficiently. This profile defines cluster settings, enabling seamless failover handling, load balancing, and overall cluster performance optimization.

Prerequisites

All gateways must be:

  • Added to the device inventory.

  • Added to a site using Classic Central.

  • Added to a HPE Aruba Networking Central gateway group.

Creating a Gateway Clustering Profile

To create a manual gateway cluster profile, complete the following steps:

  1. In the HPE Aruba Networking Central landing page, click the configuration icon.

    The Profiles tab is displayed by default.

  2. In the left navigation menu, select Device Groups.

    The Device Groups table is displayed containing the list of device groups.

    Note:

    The profiles at the Device Group level are assigned a device group scope by default.

  3. Select a device group from which you want to create a gateway cluster profile.

    The Profiles Management page under Profiles tab is displayed.

  4. From the Device Function drop-down list, select Mobility Gateway as the device type.

    Note:

    If the device group is configured with both the device functions—Mobility AP and Mobility Gateway, the Device Function drop-down list displays Mobility AP by default.

  5. On the High Availability card, click Gateway Clustering Profile.

    Alternatively, you can complete the following steps:

    1. On the High Availability card, click Manage.

    2. On the Gateway Clustering Profile card, click Manage.

    The Gateway Clustering Profile configuration page is displayed.

  6. Click Create Profile.
    The Create Profile side panel is displayed.

  7. Configure the gateway cluster profile parameters as described in the following table.

    Parameter

    Description

    Create as a local profile

    The gateway cluster profile is configured as a local profile by default. You cannot uncheck this check box.

    Name

    Enter the name of the gateway cluster profile.

    The profile name must be between 1 and 31 characters in length, and can include letters, numbers and special characters. Space is not allowed in the profile name.

    Description

    Enter a brief description for the manual gateway cluster profile.

    The description can include a maximum of 128 characters including letters, numbers, and special characters.

    Note:

    The Default Gateway Mode check box is currently not supported.

    Cluster Mode

    The Manual radio button is selected by default.

    Note:

    The Automatic radio button is currently not supported.

    Multicast VLAN

    (Optional) Select a multicast VLAN from the drop-down list.

    The multicast traffic is sent or received by the overlay clients on this VLAN. This VLAN is already configured in the library and mapped to this particular device group scope.

    Heartbeat Threshold

    Define the time interval (in milliseconds) for detecting gateway failures.

    The Default radio button supports a default value of 900 milliseconds. You can select Custom to set a value between 500 and 65535 milliseconds.

    Gateway Clustering

    Display the gateways that are present in the particular device group. To add a gateway, complete the following steps:

    1. Click + to open the Add Gateway panel.
    2. Select a gateway from the Gateway drop-down list .
    3. Click Add.
    Note:

    To add more gateways, repeat the above steps.

  8. Click Create.

    The new cluster profile along with the number of gateways added are displayed on the Gateway Clustering Profile configuration page.

Note:

In the Gateway Clustering Profile configuration page, you can click the list icon to verify the role of each gateway in the cluster. The gateway role is displayed as Gateway Cluster- Leader and Gateway Cluster- Member under Type column in the Devices table.

For example, the Devices table displays one Gateway Cluster- Leader and one Gateway Cluster- Member for a two-node cluster, Similarly, for a four-node cluster, the table displays one Gateway Cluster- Leader and three Gateway Cluster- Member. See Gateway Cluster Profile List View.

Note:

On the High Availability card, you can view the number of profiles under Profile for the Gateway Clustering Profile section.

Editing a Gateway Clustering Profile

To edit a manual gateway cluster profile, complete the following steps:

  1. In the HPE Aruba Networking Central landing page, click the configuration icon.

    The Network Overview page is displayed.

  2. In the left navigation menu, select Device Groups.

    The device group list view is displayed.

    Note:

    The profiles at the Device Group level are assigned a device group scope by default.

  3. Select a device group from which you want to edit a gateway cluster profile.

    The Profiles Management page is displayed.

  4. From the Device Function drop-down list, select Mobility Gateway as the device type.

    Note:

    If the device group is configured with both the device functions—Mobility AP and Mobility Gateway, the Device Function drop-down list displays Mobility AP by default.

  5. On the High Availability card, click Gateway Clustering Profile.

    Alternatively, you can complete the following steps:

    1. On the High Availability card, click Manage.

    2. On the Gateway Clustering Profile card, click Manage.

    The Gateway Clustering Profile configuration page is displayed.

  6. Click a gateway cluster profile name from the table.
    The Edit Profile side panel is displayed.

    Note:

    Limitation—The Reference tab does not display the WLAN SSID profile details which refers to it.

  7. Edit the gateway cluster profile parameters as described in the following table.

    Parameter

    Description

    Create as a local profile

    The gateway cluster profile is configured as a local profile by default. You cannot uncheck this check box.

    Dynamic Authorization (CoA)

    Enable Change of Authorization (CoA) for the gateway cluster.

    Selecting this check box displays the VRRP VLAN drop-down list.

    VRRP VLAN

    Specify the VLAN used for Virtual Router Redundancy Protocol (VRRP).

    Select the VRRP VLAN from the drop-down list.

    VRRP Passphrase

    Enter the passphrase to secure communication between the VRRP-enabled gateways in the cluster.

    Gateway Clustering

    Display the gateways that are present in the particular device group. To add a gateway, complete the following steps:

    1. Click + to open the Add Gateway panel.
    2. Select a gateway from the Gateway drop-down list .
    3. Click Add.
    Note:

    To add more gateways, repeat the above steps.

    VRRP IP

    Specify the Virtual Router Redundancy Protocol (VRRP) IP address for seamless failover within the gateway cluster. To configure the VRRP IP, complete the following steps:

    1. Under Gateway Clustering, click the edit icon to open the Edit Gateway panel.
    2. Enter the VRRP IP address in the VRRP IP text box.
    3. Click Add.

  8. Click Update.

Deleting a Gateway Clustering Profile

To delete a manual gateway cluster profile, complete the following steps:

  1. In the HPE Aruba Networking Central landing page, click the configuration icon.

    The Network Overview page is displayed.

  2. In the left navigation menu, select Device Groups.

    The device group list view is displayed.

    Note:

    If you create profiles at the Device Group level, then the profiles have device group scope assigned by default.

  3. Select a device group from which you want to delete a gateway cluster profile.

    The Profiles Management page is displayed.

  4. From the Device Function drop-down list, select Mobility Gateway as the device type.

    Note:

    If the device group is configured with both the device functions—Mobility AP and Mobility Gateway, the Device Function drop-down list displays Mobility AP by default.

  5. On the High Availability card, click Gateway Clustering Profile.

    Alternatively, you can complete the following steps:

    1. On the High Availability card, click Manage.

    2. On the Gateway Clustering Profile card, click Manage.

    The Gateway Clustering Profile configuration page is displayed.

  6. Hover over the profile that you want to delete, and click the delete icon.
    The Delete Profile pop-up window is displayed.

  7. Click Delete.

    The cluster profile is deleted from the Gateway Clustering Profile configuration page.

Note:

To search for a profile, type the profile name in the search bar. The search bar displays dynamic results as soon as you start typing.

Note:

  • Each platform has a specific limit on the number of gateways it supports when you add gateways to a cluster profile. If you add more gateways than the platform allows, HPE Aruba Networking Central displays an error message. See Error Message-1.

  • If you delete a gateway cluster profile that is being referenced in a WLAN SSID profile, HPE Aruba Networking Central displays an error message. See Error Message-2.
