Static Routing Profile

Static routing enables network routes to be fixed instead of using a dynamic routing protocol. These routes are manually configured and updated by the administrator. Static routing is useful for defining default routes and meeting specific network requirements. The Static Routing profile operates as a multi-instance configuration, optimizing the management of routing paths within a network. To utilize a static routing profile, specific aliases must be created, including Nexthop IPv4 address, IPv4 address, and IPv4 address aliases. Aliases will only be transmitted to the gateway if referenced within a static route profile.

A key benefit is that multiple profiles across different scopes can reference the same alias, enhancing reusability. The Static Routing profile allows for configuring both IP routes and default gateways simultaneously.

Creating a Static Routing Profile

To create a Static Routing profile, complete the following steps:

  1. In the HPE Aruba Networking Central landing page, click the configurationicon.
    The Profiles tab is displayed.

  2. In the left navigation menu, select one of the following options:

    • Library—This is the default selection. If you create profiles in the Library, then you must assign scope and device functions to the profiles. For more information, see Assigning Scope to a Static Routing Profile.

    • Global—If you create profiles at the Global level, then the profiles have Global scope assigned by default.

    • Site Collections—If you create profiles at the Site Collections level, then the profiles have site collection scope assigned by default.

    • Sites—If you create profiles at the Site level, then the profiles have site scope assigned by default.

    • Devices—If you create profiles at the Device level, then the profiles have device scope assigned by default.

    • Device Groups—If you create profiles at the Device Group level, then the profiles have device group scope assigned by default.

    Note:

    • To create profiles at the Global level, select the device type from the Device Function drop-down list before step 4.

    • To create profiles at the Site Collections, Sites, Devices, and Device Group level, complete the following steps before step 4:

      1. Select Site Collection, Site, Device, or Device Group in the left navigation menu.

      2. Select a Site Collection, Site, Device, or Device Group from the list view depending on the level where you are creating the profile.

      3. Select the device type from the Device Function drop-down list.

  3. On the Routing & Overlays card, click Static Routing.
    Alternatively, you can complete the following steps:

    1. On the Routing & Overlays card, click Manage.

    2. On the Static Routing card, click Manage.

    The Static Routing list view is displayed.

  4. Click Create Profile.
    The Create Profile side panel is displayed.

  5. Configure the Static Routing profile parameters:

    • Create as a local profile—Select this checkbox if you want to configure this profile as local.

      Note:

      The Create as a local profile checkbox is available at the Global, Site Collections, Sites, Devices, and Device Groups levels. It is not available at the Library level.

    • Name—Enter the name of the Static Routing profile.

    • Description—Enter the description for the Static Routing profile

    • IP Routes—Select IPv4 or IPv6 as the routing type. To create a IPv4 Static Routing profile for gateways, select IPv4 as the routing type. To create a IPv4 Static Routing profile for gateways, select IPv6 as the routing type.

  6. In the IP Routes section, click the add icon.

    The Create IP Routes side panel is displayed.

  7. Configure the IP route parameters:

    • Destination—Enter the destination IPv4 or IPv6 address based on your IP Routes selection in step 5.

    • Forwarding Type—Select one of the forwarding type from the following:

      • Next Hop—Select this option to forward the packets to the next hop of the network. To create a IPv4 Static Routing profile for gateways, select Next Hop as the forwarding type.

      • Drop—Select this option to discard the packets without sending any notification back to the source of the packet.

      • Reject—Select this option to discard the packets and to send an ICMP message back to the source of the packet. This forwarding type is not supported in gateways.

      • VLAN—Select this option to forward the packets to the VLAN. Select a VLAN from the VLAN drop-down list. This option is available when IPv6 is selected as the routing type. This forwarding type is not supported in gateways.

    • Next Hop—Enter the next hop IPv4 or IPv6 address in the text box.

    • Use Nexthop Alias—Select this check box to use alias as the nexthop. When you select the Use Nexthop Alias check box, Next Hop parameter is hidden. Select an alias from the Alias* drop-down list. Click New Alias to create a new alias. For more information, see Creating an Alias.

    • Distance—Enter the IP route distance value.

    • Device Specific Parameters—Select the Switch Parameters, Gateway Parameters, or both check boxes as required.

      • In the Switch Parameters section, select a VRF profile from the VRF drop-down menu.

      • In the Gateway Parameters section, enter the required Metric value.

  8. Click Create.

  9. In the Default Gateways section, click the add icon.

    The Create Default Gateways side panel is displayed.

  10. Configure the default gateways parameters:

    • Use Default Gateway Address Alias—Select this check box to use the alias as the default gateway address.

    • Alias—Select an alias from the drop down list. Click New Alias to create a new alias. For more information, see Creating an Alias.

    • Default Gateways IP Address—Enter the destination IPv4 or IPv6 address based on your IP Routes selection in step 6.

    • Metric—Enter the required metric value.

    Note:

    Both Use Default Gateway Address Alias and Default Gateways IP Address options are not supported together.

  11. Click Create.

  12. Click Create.

  • To delete a Static Routing profile, hover over the profile name, and click the delete icon.

  • To search for a profile, type the profile name in the search bar.
    The search bar displays dynamic results as soon as you start typing.

Assigning Scope to a Static Routing Profile

You must assign a scope and device function to a Static Routing profile created in the Library.

To assign scope to a profile, complete the following steps:

  1. In the HPE Aruba Networking Central landing page, click the configurationicon.
    The Profiles tab is displayed.

  2. Ensure that the default option Library is selected in the left navigation menu.

  3. On the Routing & Overlays card, click Static Routing.
    Alternatively, you can complete the following steps:

    1. On the Routing & Overlays card, click Manage.

    2. On the Static Routing card, click Manage.

    The Static Routing list view is displayed.

  4. Hover on the profile to which you want to assign a scope and click the ellipsis icon.

  5. Select Assign.

    The Assign Profile side panel is displayed.

  6. Select the device types from Device Function list.

  7. To add a scope, click the Add icon on the Scopes table.

  8. Select a scope from the following Scope Level options in the drop-down list.

    • Global—Selecting this option assigns the scope at the Global level.

    • Site Collections—Select the site collections from the Assign to Scope drop-down list.

    • Sites—Select the sites from the Assign to Scope drop-down list.

    • Devices—Select the devices from the Assign to Scope drop-down list.

    • Device Groups—Select the device groups from the Assign to Scope drop-down list.

  9. Click Add.

    The Scopes table displays the newly added scopes.

  10. Click Assign.

    The Static Routing list displays the device functions and number of scopes assigned to the profile.

  11. To unassign a scope from a profile, complete the following steps:

    1. Hover on the profile name and click the ellipsis icon.

    2. Select Unassign.

    3. Select the required scope and click Unassign.

  12. To customize the Static Routing profile list, click the Customize Columns icon .

Audit Trail

The Audit Trail application in the Menu page offers a valuable resource for analyzing user actions. This application allows you to easily access transaction logs from all apps that publish to it in HPE Aruba Networking Central, enabling you to gain insights and facilitate better decision-making.

The following audit trail messages are supported for Static Routing profile in HPE Aruba Networking Central:

  • Profile created—Indicates that a Static Routing profile is created.

  • Profile updated—Indicates that a Static Routing profile is updated.

  • Profile deleted—Indicates that a Static Routing profile is deleted.
