VRRP Router Profile

Virtual Router Redundancy Protocol (VRRP) is an election protocol that dynamically assigns responsibility for a virtual router to one of the VRRP routers on a LAN.

Creating a VRRP Router Profile

To create a VRRP Router profile, complete the following steps:

  1. In the HPE Aruba Networking Central landing page, click the configurationicon.
    The Profiles tab is displayed.

  2. In the left navigation menu, select one of the following options:

    • Library—This is the default selection. If you create profiles in the Library, then you must assign scope and device functions to the profiles. For more information, see Assigning Scope to a VRRP Router Profile.

    • Global—If you create profiles at the Global level, then the profiles have Global scope assigned by default.

    • Site Collections—If you create profiles at the Site Collections level, then the profiles have site collection scope assigned by default.

    • Sites—If you create profiles at the Site level, then the profiles have site scope assigned by default.

    • Devices—If you create profiles at the Device level, then the profiles have device scope assigned by default.

    • Device Groups—If you create profiles at the Device Group level, then the profiles have device group scope assigned by default.

    Note:

    • To create profiles at the Global level, select the device type from the Device Function drop-down list before step 4.

    • To create profiles at the Site Collections, Sites, Devices, and Device Group level, complete the following steps before step 4:

      1. Select Site Collection, Site, Device, or Device Group in the left navigation menu.

      2. Select a Site Collection, Site, Device, or Device Group from the list view depending on the level where you are creating the profile.

      3. Select the device type from the Device Function drop-down list.

  3. On the VLANs & Networks card, click VRRP Router.
    Alternatively, you can complete the following steps:

    1. On the VLANs & Networks card, click Manage.

    2. On the VRRP Router card, click Manage.

    The VRRP Router list view is displayed.

  4. Click Create Profile.
    The Create Profile side panel is displayed.

  5. Configure the VRRP Router profile parameters:

    • Create as a local profile—Select this checkbox if you want to configure this profile as local.

      Note:

      The Create as a local profile checkbox is available at the Global, Site Collections, Sites, Devices, and Device Groups levels. It is not available at the Library level.

    • Name—Enter the name of the VRRP Router profile.

    • Description—Enter the description for the VRRP Router profile.

  6. In the VRRP Router section, click the add icon.

    The Add Virtual Router side panel is displayed.

  7. Configure the following parameters as applicable:

    • Virtual Router ID—Enter a virtual router ID value.

    • IP Address Family—Set the IP address family type as IPv4 or IPv6.

    • Virtual IP Address—Enter the virtual IP address as per the selected IP address family type.

    • Priority—Enter a priority value.

    • Disable VRRP—Select this checkbox to disable VRRP.

    • Enable Preempt—Select this checkbox to enable preempt. If selected the Preempt Delay field is displayed.

      • Enter the preempt delay value in the Preempt Delay field.

    • Advanced—If selected, the following configuration parameters are displayed:

      • Advertise Interval—Enter the advertise interval value.

      • Device Type—Set the device type as Switch or Gateway.

        If the device type is Switch, the following configuration parameters are displayed:

        • Enable BFD—Select this checkbox to enable Bidirectional Forwarding Detection (BFD). If selected, the IP Address field is displayed.

          • Enter the IP address in the IP Address field.

        • VRRP Version—Select the VRRP version from the drop-down menu. If the VRRP version is set as V3, the Version-3 Checksum checkbox is displayed.

          • Select the Version-3 Checksum checkbox if required.

        • Enable Tracking—Select this checkbox to enable tracking. If selected, the following configuration parameters are displayed:

          • Track ID—Enter the track ID value.

          • Tracking Type—Select the tracking type from the drop-down menu.

            The VRRP Tracking Items section is displayed.

            • Click the add icon, and configure the following parameters as required:

              • Tracking Name—Enter a tracking name.

              • VLAN—Select a VLAN from the drop-down menu.

              • Click Add.

        • Authentication—Select the authentication type.

        • Text Type—if the text type is set as Plain Text, the Plain text field is displayed.

          Enter the required text in the Plain Text field.

        If the device type is Gateway, the following configuration parameters are displayed:

        • Hold Time—Enter the hold time value.

        • Enable Tracking—Select this checkbox to enable tracking. If selected, the following configuration parameters are displayed:

          • Tracking Type—Select the tracking type from the drop-down menu.

            The VRRP Tracking Items section is displayed.

            • Click the add icon, and configure the following parameters as required:

              • Tracking Name—Enter a tracking name.

              • Uplink VLAN—Select a VLAN from the drop-down menu.

              • Priority Offset Operation Substraction—If selected the Priority Offset field is displayed.

                • Enter an offset value in the Priority Offset field.

              • Click Add.

        • Password—Enter a password.

  8. Click Add.

    The configured virtual router is added under the VRRP Router section.

  9. Click Create.

  • To delete a VRRP Router profile, hover over the profile name, and click the delete icon.

  • To search for a profile, type the profile name in the search bar.
    The search bar displays dynamic results as soon as you start typing.

Assigning Scope to a VRRP Router Profile

You must assign a scope and device function to a VRRP Router profile created in the Library.

To assign scope to a profile, complete the following steps:

  1. In the HPE Aruba Networking Central landing page, click the configurationicon.
    The Profiles tab is displayed.

  2. Ensure that the default option Library is selected in the left navigation menu.

  3. On the VLANs & Networks card, click VRRP Router.
    Alternatively, you can complete the following steps:

    1. On the VLANs & Networks card, click Manage.

    2. On the VRRP Router card, click Manage.

    The VRRP Router list view is displayed.

  4. Hover on the profile to which you want to assign a scope and click the ellipsis icon.

  5. Select Assign.

    The Assign Profile side panel is displayed.

  6. Select the device types from Device Function list.

  7. To add a scope, click the Add icon on the Scopes table.

  8. Select a scope from the following Scope Level options in the drop-down list.

    • Global—Selecting this option assigns the scope at the Global level.

    • Site Collections—Select the site collections from the Assign to Scope drop-down list.

    • Sites—Select the sites from the Assign to Scope drop-down list.

    • Devices—Select the devices from the Assign to Scope drop-down list.

    • Device Groups—Select the device groups from the Assign to Scope drop-down list.

  9. Click Add.

    The Scopes table displays the newly added scopes.

  10. Click Assign.

    The Route Map list displays the device functions and number of scopes assigned to the profile.

  11. To unassign a scope from a profile, complete the following steps:

    1. Hover on the profile name and click the ellipsis icon.

    2. Select Unassign.

    3. Select the required scope and click Unassign.

  12. To customize the VRRP Router profile list, click the Customize Columns icon.

Attaching a VRRP Router Profile to a VLAN Profile

To attach a VRRP Router profile to a VLAN profile, complete the following steps:

  1. In the HPE Aruba Networking Central landing page, click the configurationicon.
    The Profiles tab is displayed.

  2. At the required scope level, on the VLANs & Networks card, click VLAN.
    Alternatively, you can complete the following steps:

    1. On the VLANs & Networks card, click Manage.

    2. On the VLAN card, click Manage.

    The VLAN list view is displayed.

  3. Select the VLAN profile to be edited.

    The Edit Profile side panel is displayed.

  4. Ensure that the Save as a local profile checkbox is ticked.

    If you are creating a VLAN profile, ensure that the Create as a local profile checkbox is ticked

    Note:

    Ensure that the VLAN profile is set or configured as a local profile, to configure the IPv4 or IPv6 address as required.

  5. Ensure that the Enable L3 checkbox is ticked.

    If you are creating a VLAN profile, Select the Enable L3 checkbox.

  6. Configure the VLAN L3 parameters as required.

  7. In the VRRP Router section, select a VRRP Router profile from the drop-down menu.

  8. Click Update.

To attach a VRRP Router profile while creating a VLAN profile, complete the following steps:

  1. Navigate to the VLAN Create Profile side panel.

  2. Ensure that the VLAN profile is created as a local profile, with the IPv4 and IPv6 parameters configured as necessary

  3. Select a VRRP Router profile from the drop-down menu, from the VRRP Router section.

Note:

To unassign a VRRP Router profile from a VLAN profile, select None from the drop-down menu, in the VRRP Router section.

Attaching a VRRP Router Profile to an ROP interface

To attach a VRRP Router profile to a LAG interface, complete the following steps:

  1. In the HPE Aruba Networking Central landing page, click the configurationicon.

    The Profiles tab is displayed.

  2. In the left navigation menu, select Devices.

    The Devices list view is displayed.

  3. Select a switch from the list.

    The Profiles Management view for the selected switch is displayed.

  4. On the Interfaces card, click Switch Interface Configuration.

  5. Alternatively, you can complete the following steps:

    1. On the Interfaces card, click Manage.

    2. On the Switch Interface Configuration card, click Manage.

    The Switch Interface Configuration list view is displayed. Additionally, the Switch Interface Configuration page displays the faceplate representation of the selected switch.

  6. Under the Ports tab, click the port name you want to configure.
    The Configure Interface side panel is displayed.

  7. In the Network Parameters section, select the Routing checkbox.

  8. Configure the IPv4 and IPv6 parameters as required. For more information, see Editing Port Settings.

  9. In the VRRP Router section, select a VRRP Router profile to be assigned from the drop-down list.

  10. Click Save.
