Dynamic Application Prioritization Profile

Dynamic Application Prioritization identifies an application using App Engine provided application tags and Unified Communication and Collaboration (UCC) solution for communication and collaboration applications. It dynamically prioritizes uplink and downlink traffic based on Service Level Agreement (SLA) metrics such as latency, jitter, and packet loss, and enforces Quality of Service (QoS) policies through application tags. It also monitors Quality of Experience (QoE) for business‑critical applications, provides visibility into upstream and downstream QoS metrics on HPE Aruba Networking Central, and delivers detailed telemetry for application monitoring. By correlating application performance with network behavior, it improves operational efficiency and optimizes end‑user experience. Note:

Dynamic Application Prioritization is currently supported only on Wi-Fi 7 AP platforms running AOS 10.7.2 and higher versions.

Co‑existence with UCC

Dynamic Application Prioritization works in tandem with UCC. While it provides dynamic traffic prioritization across all application traffic, UCC focuses on communication and collaboration flows with visibility and Wi-Fi Multimedia (WMM)‑based prioritization. From version AOS 10.7.2 onwards, both features are enabled by default on HPE Aruba Networking Central. Dynamic Application Prioritization ensures SLA compliance for all traffic, whereas UCC is applicable to collaboration applications.

Licensing requirements:

  • Foundation License—UCC and Dynamic Application Prioritization features are enabled by default with ten applications default prioritized using pre-defined Differentiated Services Code Point (DSCP) values. With Foundation License subscription, default SLA or QoS values are applied but cannot be changed. Custom applications are not supported under this license. Application experience and visibility is available for application identification, traffic default prioritization, monitoring and reporting purposes.   • Advanced License—UCC and Dynamic Application Prioritization are enabled with advanced traffic flow prioritization capabilities. UCC and DAP can be used to prioritize supported applications with configurable SLA or QoS parameters. Custom applications are supported to define and add new applications. Advanced License subscription offers third-party application integration with collaboration platforms such as Microsoft Teams and Zoom. AI‑driven insights and troubleshooting services for deeper analytics and faster resolution is available with Advanced License subscription.

Creating a Dynamic Application Prioritization Profile

To create a Dynamic Application Prioritization profile, complete the following steps:

  1. On the Network Overview page, select a site from the Sites menu.

    Alternatively, you can click the expand icon on the Sites menu to search for a site from the list.

    The site dashboard is displayed with the network and connectivity information for the site.

  2. Click the configuration icon.

    The Configuration Overview page is displayed.

  3. In the left navigation menu, select one of the following options:

    • Library—This is the default selection. If you create profiles in the Library, then you must assign scope and device functions to the profiles. For more information, see Assigning Scope and Device Function to Profile.

    • Global—If you create profiles at the Global level, then the profiles have Global scope assigned by default.

    • Site Collections—If you create profiles at the Site Collections level, then the profiles have site collection scope assigned by default.

    • Sites—If you create profiles at the Site level, then the profiles have site scope assigned by default.

    • Devices—If you create profiles at the Device level, then the profiles have device scope assigned by default.

    • Device Groups—If you create profiles at the Device Group level, then the profiles have device group scope assigned by default.

    Note:

    • To create profiles at the Global level, select the device type from the Device Function drop-down list before step 4.
    • To create profiles at the Site Collections, Sites, Devices, and Device Group level, complete the following steps before step 4:

      1. Select Site Collection, Site, Device, or Device Group in the left navigation menu.

      2. Select a Site Collection, Site, Device, or Device Group from the list view depending on the level where you are creating the profile.

      3. Select the device type from the Device Function drop-down list.

  4. Click Services tab.

    The Services Management page is displayed.

  5. Under Dynamic Application Prioritization tile, click Manage.

    The Dynamic Application Prioritization list view is displayed.

  6. Click Create Profile.
    The Create Profile side panel is displayed.

  7. Configure the following Dynamic Application Prioritization profile parameters:

    • Create as a local profile—Select this checkbox if you want to configure this profile as local.

      Note:

      The Create as a local profile checkbox is available at the Global, Site Collections, Sites, Devices, and Device Groups levels. It is not available at the Library level.

    • Name—Enter the name of the Dynamic Application Prioritization profile.

      Note:

      This configuration will take effect when advanced license subscription is available.

    • Description—Enter the description for the Dynamic Application Prioritization profile.

    • Dynamic Application Prioritization—Select this checkbox to enable dynamic application prioritization feature for this profile.

  8. Click Create.

    The Dynamic Application Prioritization profile is created and displayed in the list view.

Assigning Scope and Device Function to Profile

You must assign a scope and device function to the Dynamic Application Prioritization profile created at the Library level.

To assign scope and device function to the profile, complete the following steps:

  1. On the Network Overview page, click the configuration icon.
    The Profiles tab is displayed.

    Ensure that the Library default option is selected in the left navigation menu.

  2. Click Services tab.
    The Services Management page is displayed.

  3. Under Dynamic Application Prioritization tile, click Manage.

    The Dynamic Application Prioritization list view is displayed.

  4. Hover on the profile to which you want to assign a scope and click the ellipsis icon.

  5. Select Assign.

    The Assign Profile side panel is displayed.

  6. Select the device types from Device Function list.

  7. To add a scope, click the Add icon on the Scopes table.

  8. Select a scope from the following Scope Level options in the drop-down list.

    • Global—Select this option to assign the scope at the Global level.

    • Site Collections—Select this option to choose site collections from the Assign to Scope drop-down list.

    • Sites—Select this option to choose sites from the Assign to Scope drop-down list.

    • Devices—Select this option to choose devices from the Assign to Scope drop-down list.

    • Device Groups—Select this option to choose device groups from the Assign to Scope drop-down list.

  9. Click Add.

    The Scopes table displays the newly added scopes.

  10. Click Assign.

    The Dynamic Application Prioritization list displays the device functions and number of scopes assigned to the profile.

  11. To unassign a scope from the profile, complete the following steps:

    1. Hover on the profile name and click the ellipsis icon.

    2. Select Unassign.

    3. Select the required scope and click Unassign.

  12. To customize the Dynamic Application Prioritization profile list, click the Customize Columns icon. For more information, see Customizing List.

Editing a Dynamic Application Prioritization Profile

To edit a profile, complete the following steps:

  1. In the Dynamic Application Prioritization table, click over the row you want to edit.

    The Edit Profile page is displayed in the right-side panel.

  2. Edit the parameters as required.

  3. Click Update.

To search for a profile, type the profile name in the search bar. The search bar displays dynamic results as soon as you start typing.

Deleting a Dynamic Application Prioritization Profile

To delete a profile, complete the following steps:

  1. In the Dynamic Application Prioritization table, hover over profile name, and click the delete icon.

    The Delete DAP Profile page is displayed.

  2. Click Delete.

Adding Application to the Dynamic Application Prioritization Profile

You can add an application only to the custom Dynamic Application Prioritization profile. By default, the system displays ten default applications, such as DROPBOX, FACETIME_AUDIO, FACETIME_VIDEO, MICROSOFT_ONEDRIVE, SIP_AUDIO, TEAMS_AUDIO, TEAMS_VIDEO, WIFI_CALLING, ZOOM_AUDIO, and ZOOM_VIDEO, for all the profiles. These applications are prioritized using pre-defined DSCP values.

To add an application to the custom Dynamic Application Prioritization profile, complete the following steps:

  1. In the Dynamic Application Prioritization table, click on the profile name.

    The application list view is displayed for the selected Dynamic Application Prioritization profile.

  2. Click Add Application.

    The Create Profile page is displayed.

  3. Enter the Application profile parameters:

    1. Application—Select the required application from the drop-down list. This configuration will take effect only when Advanced License subscription is available.

    2. WLAN Prioritization Profile—Select one of the following options from the drop-down list:

      • High-Throughput—Select this option to prioritize bulk data transfer and high bandwidth.

      • Video-Conference—Select this option to tailor for real‑time video communication.

      • Voice—Select this option to optimize VoIP calls and latency-sensitive voice applications in real‑time with strict delay and reliability requirements.

      • Streaming—Select this option to ensure smooth video or audio playback with minimal buffering.

        This parameter allows you to create a custom SLA profile.

    3. (Optional) To create a new custom SLA profile, perform the following steps:

      1. Under WLAN Prioritization Profile drop-down menu, select New Custom SLA.

        The Add Custom SLA page is displayed.

      2. Configure the following custom SLA profile parameters:

        • SLA Name—Enter the name of the SLA profile.

          Range: 1 to 64 alphanumeric characters.

        • DSCP Marking—Enter the DSCP marking values. Configured QoS value is applied to the applications mapped to the selected WLAN prioritization profile.

          Range: 1 to 63 numeric values.

      3. Click Create.

        The custom SLA profile is created and displayed in the WLAN Prioritization Profile drop-down menu.

  4. Click Create.

    The application is added to the selected Dynamic Application Prioritization profile. Custom applications are editable, whereas default applications are fixed and cannot be modified.

Assign scope and device function to applications

You can assign a scope and a device function only to the custom applications added to the Dynamic Application Prioritization profile.

To assign a scope and a device function to the application, perform the following steps:

  1. In Dynamic Application Prioritization list view, hover on the application to which you want to assign a scope and click the ellipsis icon.

  2. Select Assign.

    The Assign Profile side panel is displayed.

  3. Select the device types from Device Function list.

  4. To add a scope, click the Add icon on the Scopes table.

  5. Select a scope from the following Scope Level options in the drop-down list.

    • Global—Select this option to assign the scope at the Global level.

    • Site Collections—Select this option to choose site collections from the Assign to Scope drop-down list.

    • Sites—Select this option to choose sites from the Assign to Scope drop-down list.

    • Devices—Select this option to choose devices from the Assign to Scope drop-down list.

    • Device Groups—Select this option to choose device groups from the Assign to Scope drop-down list.

  6. Click Add.

    The Scopes table displays the newly added scopes.

  7. Click Assign.

    The Dynamic Application Prioritization application list view displays the device functions and number of scopes assigned to the custom application.

  8. To unassign a scope from the profile, complete the following steps:

    1. Hover on the profile name and click the ellipsis icon.

    2. Select Unassign.

    3. Select the required scope and click Unassign.

Filtering Applications in the List View

Applications can be filtered using keywords (name, state, DSCP values, device function, or scope) in the search bar, or by quick filters based on application type (Custom or Default) and combinations of filter options.

Dynamic Application Prioritization toggle allows you to enable or disable the dynamic application prioritization feature for the selected profile.
