Viewing Firmware Policy Details

HPE Aruba Networking Central allows you to view the firmware policy details in the Firmware Management application.

To view the firmware policy detail, complete the following steps:

  1. In the HPE Aruba Networking Central landing page, click the icon to open the Menu page.

  2. On the Firmware Management card, click Manage.

    The Firmware Management page is displayed.

  3. In the left navigation, select one of the following based on your monitoring requirements:

  • Overview—Provides a high-level view to monitor firmware upgrade status of individual devices.

  • Firmware Policies—Displays a list of all the firmware policies that are configured across all scope levels.

  • Global—Displays a list of firmware policies configured at the Global scope level, including inherited policies.

  • Site Collections—Displays a list of site collections and firmware policies configured at the selected site collection, or inherited from a higher scope.

    • Click on a particular site collection name in the list view to access the Firmware Policies page for the selected site collection.

  • Sites—Displays a list of sites and firmware policies configured at the selected site, or inherited from a higher scope.

    • Click on a particular site name in the list view to access the Firmware Policies page for the selected site.

  • Devices—Displays a list of devices and monitors their firmware status.

  • Device Groups—Displays a list of device groups and firmware policies configured at the selected device group, or inherited from a higher scope.

    • Click on a particular device group name in the list view to access the Firmware Policies page for the selected device group.

  1. To view the Firmware policy details, complete the following steps:

  • In the Firmware Policies page, hover over the policy name that you want to view the firmware policy details.

  • Click the firmware policy name to open the Firmware Policy side panel.

The firmware policy details are displayed for the selected firmware policy containing the following parameter details.

Column

Description

Name

Displays the name of the firmware policy.

Description

Displays the description of the firmware policy.

Firmware Policy Status

Displays the current firmware policy status (for example, Active or Paused).

Scope

Displays the scope where the firmware policy is applied, based on your selection (such as Global, one or more Sites, Site Collections, Devices, or Device Groups).

Device Function

Displays the device types selected for the firmware policy.

Firmware Version

Displays the firmware version for the selected firmware policy.

Upgrade Type

Displays the upgrade type for the selected firmware policy (for example, Standard or Live).

Upgrades

Displays the upgrade types applied to the selected firmware policy.

Pre-download Firmware Image Displays the status whether the firmware image is downloaded in advance before the scheduled upgrade time (for example, Yes or No).
Upgrade Non-Failsafe Modules Displays the status indicating whether the non-failsafe module(s) is upgraded or not during reboot (for example, Yes or No).
Note:

Non-failsafe upgrades are not supported on AOS-CX devices running firmware version 10.14.

Model Firmware Exceptions

Displays the model firmware exceptions applied to the selected firmware policy.

  1. In the Firmware Policy side panel, complete the following steps as per the requirement:

  • Pause or Resume Firmware Policy – Allows users to pause or resume the firmware policy. For more information, see Pause/Resume Firmware Policy.

  • Firmware Policy Overrides – Displays the Firmware Policy overrides at X scope(s) message, where X scope(s) reflects live count of overrides linked to the selected firmware policy. You can click View to open the Firmware Policy Overrides dialog page. For more information about Firmware Policy Overrides, see Firmware Policy Overrides.

  • Edit Firmware Policy - Allows users to edit the selected firmware policy. For more information, see Editing a Firmware Policy.

Pause/Resume Firmware Policy

HPE Aruba Networking Central allows you to pause or resume the firmware policy. This feature is particularly useful in scenarios where users need to retry the firmware upgrade process, troubleshoot the upgrade issue, or verify the system stability before resuming large-scale firmware upgrades.

Pausing Firmware Policy

When the firmware policy is paused, all future scheduled upgrades are canceled for all devices managed under the selected firmware policy. The completed firmware upgrades remain unchanged and are not rolled back. The ongoing upgrades are aborted and devices remain unchanged on their current firmware. Devices already in the rebooting stage continue until the upgrade is complete.

To pause the firmware policy, complete the following steps:

  1. Click on the firmware policy that you want to pause, to open the Firmware Policy side panel.

  2. Click the ellipsis icon in the Firmware Policy side panel.

    Alternatively, hover over the policy name that you want to pause and click the ellipsis icon.

  3. Click Pause. A Pause Firmware Policy pop-up window is displayed.

  4. Click Pause to confirm the pause operation.

The firmware policy is paused. A popup message Firmware policy paused is displayed in the Firmware Policy details page. The Firmware Policy Status field under the Firmware Policy details page and the Status field under the Firmware Polices and Global pages are updated and displayed as Paused.

Note:

When the firmware policy is paused, the firmware status changes and device behaviors are as follows:

  • In the Firmware Status column, the firmware status is displayed as Upgrade Aborted under the Overview and Devices pages when the ongoing upgrades are aborted.

  • In the Firmware Status column, the firmware status is updated to the Upgrade Canceled from the Upgrade Scheduled state under the Overview and Devices pages when the scheduled firmware upgrades are canceled.

  • Gateway and non-gateway devices continue to download the image if the image download has already started. Gateway devices do not reboot, while non-gateway devices complete the reboot and upgrade processes.

  • Devices at the image download-complete and rebooting stage continue rebooting and complete the upgrade process.

    • Firmware Status remains in the Upgrade Successful state under the Overview and Devices pages for the devices that have completed the upgrade process such as downloading the image and rebooting the devices.

    • Firmware Status remains in the Upgrade Failed state under Overview and Devices pages for the devices where the upgrade has failed.

Resuming Firmware Policy

When the firmware policy is resumed, the upgrade settings are reapplied, and the firmware upgrades are started from the initial state according to immediate or future scheduled upgrades whenever needed. If the scheduled upgrade time has already passed, non-compliant devices are upgraded immediately. If the scheduled upgrade time is in the future, the devices run the upgrades automatically at the scheduled time.

To resume the firmware policy, complete the following steps:

  1. Click on the firmware policy that you want to resume, to open the Firmware Policy side panel.

  2. Click the ellipsis icon in the Firmware Policy side panel.

    Alternatively, hover over the policy name that you want to resume and click the ellipsis icon.

  3. Click Resume. A Resume Firmware Policy pop-up window is displayed.

  4. Click Resume to confirm the resume operation.

The firmware policy is resumed and active. A popup message Firmware policy Resumed is displayed in the Firmware Policy details page. The Firmware Policy Status field under the Firmware Policy details page and the Status field under the Firmware Polices and Global pages are displayed as Active.

Note:

When the firmware policy is resumed, the firmware status changes and device behaviors are as follows:

  • If the scheduled upgrade time has already passed, the firmware policy is resumed and the firmware upgrades are started from the initial state for immediate upgrades and scheduled upgrades.

  • If the scheduled upgrade time has not yet passed, the firmware status is displayed as Upgrade Scheduled for the scheduled upgrades in the Firmware Status column under the Overview and Devices pages.

  • Complaint devices that are already in the Upgrade Successful state remain unchanged and will not upgrade.

  • Devices in the Upgrade Failed state initiate a retry operation.

Resync Firmware Policy

HPE Aruba Networking Central allows you to manually resynchronize the firmware policy only when the policy is resumed and in active state. The Resync Firmware Policy does not impact devices that are scheduled to upgrade at a future time.

To resynchronize the firmware policy, complete the following steps:

  1. Click on the firmware policy that you want to resynchronize, to open the Firmware Policy side panel.

  2. Click the ellipsis icon in the Firmware Policy side panel.

    Alternatively, hover over the policy name that you want to resume and click the ellipsis icon.

  3. Click Resync Firmware Policy. A Resync Firmware Policy pop-up window is displayed.

  4. Click Resync to confirm the resynchronize operation.

The firmware policy is resynchronized, and the devices not compliant with the firmware policy are upgraded.
