Managing Firmware Settings and Monitoring Upgrades

You can view firmware management parameters and monitor device firmware status from multiple pages in the Firmware Management section of HPE Aruba Networking Central. These pages are accessible through the left navigation on the Firmware Management page. Each page displays different sets of monitoring information depending on the selected scope or view.

To view the firmware management parameters, complete the following steps:

In the HPE Aruba Networking Central landing page, click the icon to open the Menu page.
On the Firmware Management card, click Manage.

The Firmware Management page is displayed.
In the left navigation, select one of the following based on your monitoring requirements:

Overview—Provides a high-level view to monitor firmware upgrade status of individual devices.
Firmware Policies—Displays a list of all the firmware policies that are configured across all scope levels.
Global—Displays a list of firmware policies configured at the Global scope level, including inherited policies.
Site Collections—Displays a list of site collections and firmware policies configured at the selected site collection, or inherited from a higher scope.
- Click on a particular site collection name in the list view to access the Firmware Policies page for the selected site collection.
Sites—Displays a list of sites and firmware policies configured at the selected site, or inherited from a higher scope.
- Click on a particular site name in the list view to access the Firmware Policies page for the selected site.
Devices—Displays a list of devices and monitors their firmware status.
Device Groups—Displays a list of device groups and firmware policies configured at the selected device group, or inherited from a higher scope.
- Click on a particular device group name in the list view to access the Firmware Policies page for the selected device group.
Note:
The Overview and Devices pages display real-time firmware status and device-level details, while other pages focus on policy configuration and inheritance.

Overview and Devices Page Firmware Parameters

From the Overview or Devices page, clicking a device name opens the Device side panel. The panel contains details of the particular device such as Device Function, Firmware Policy, Firmware Version, Firmware Status and so on.

The following table describes the firmware policy parameters in list view for the Overview and Devices pages.

Name	The name of the device.
Type	The device type and its topology.
Site	The site that the device is assigned to.
Firmware Version	The firmware version currently installed on the device.
Recommended Version	The firmware version that is recommended for the device.
Firmware Status	The current firmware status of the device. Device Model	The device model number.
MAC Address	The device MAC address.
Serial Number	The device serial number.
Device Function	The persona assigned to the device.
Recommendation Reason	The reason for recommending a new firmware version.
Last Upgraded	The date of the last firmware upgrade.

Note:

After a firmware upgrade, the Firmware Status column displays either the Upgrade Successful or the Upgrade Failed status. The status is retained for 14 days, even if the firmware policy is deleted or paused. The status will automatically transition after 14 days to either:

"New Firmware Recommended" if an AIOPs firmware version recommendation is available; or
"–" if the AIOPs firmware version recommendation is not available.

Filtering Devices in the List View

You can filter devices depending on your criteria. You can either use keywords (device name, model, or any other device information) in the search bar to find your devices. You can also use the quick filters to filter devices as per device type (Access Point, Gateway, or Switch) or any combination of the options.

The following table describes the quick filters.

Access Point	Select this tab to view the APs at a site in the list view.
Gateway	Select this tab to view the gateways at a site in the list view.
Switch	Select this tab to view the switches at a site in the list view.

Tab	Description
Security Vulnerability	Select this tab to view devices that need a firmware upgrade to fix security vulnerabilities.
Bug Fix	Select this tab to view devices that need a firmware upgrade to fix existing firmware bugs.
Enhancement	Select this tab to view devices that can get new features or improvements through a firmware upgrade.

Additionally, you can access the Filters pop-up window by clicking the filter icon, selecting the filter criteria with respect to Device Function, Firmware Status, Site, Firmware Version, and Device Model, and then clicking Apply.

Firmware Policies Page Parameters

The following table describes all firmware policy parameters in list view for the Firmware Policies page.

Name	The name of the firmware policy.
Scope Level	The level at which the firmware policy is created.
Scope	The name of the scope that the device is assigned to.
Device Function	The persona assigned to the device.
Firmware Version	The firmware version currently installed on the device.
Overrides	Indicates whether the firmware policy is overridden by a firmware policy created at a lower scope.
Status	The status of the firmware policy (for example, Active or Paused).

Firmware Policy Overrides

The Firmware Policy Overrides feature allows firmware policies created at a lower scope to take precedence over the policies created at a higher scope in the hierarchy model. For example, when the user creates a firmware policy at a site collection, any sites within the same site collection that already have an existing firmware policy block upgrades for a specific device function. However, the user can view all the overrides in the Firmware Policy Overrides page to identify which devices are excluded from upgrades.

To view the Firmware Policy Overrides page, click on the non-zero override count in the Overrides column from the Firmware Policies page.

Scope Page Firmware Parameters

The following table describes the firmware policy parameters in list view for the Global, Site Collections, Sites, and Device Groups scope level pages.

Inherits From	The scope level from which the firmware policy is inherited.
Scope	The name of the scope that the device is assigned to.
Device Function	The persona assigned to the device.
Firmware Version	The firmware version currently installed on the device.
Overrides	Indicates whether the firmware policy is overridden by a firmware policy created at a lower scope.
Status	The status of the firmware policy (for example, Active or Paused).

Note:

To customize the table for various scope level pages, click the icon and select Customize Columns to select the required columns. You can also click Reset Column Sizes to set the table to the default columns.

Firmware Management Audit Trail

The Audit Trail application in the Menu page offers a valuable resource for analyzing firmware policy actions and per-device upgrade events. This application enables administrators to view transaction logs generated by the Firmware Management application, offering a streamlined approach to tracking and auditing firmware-related activities. Supported Audit Trail Messages

The following logs are generated under Action column for firmware-related activities in Audit Trail page:

Audit trail logs the following messages when a user creates, edits, or deletes a firmware policy:
- Scope Assigned—Indicates that a firmware policy is created.
- Firmware Policy updated—Indicates that the firmware policy details are edited or updated.
- Scope Un-Assigned—Indicates that a firmware policy is deleted.
Audit trail logs the following messages at the per-device level during standard firmware upgrades:
- Upgrade Initiated—Indicates that the firmware upgrade process is started.
- Upgrade Successful—Indicates that the firmware upgrade process is completed.
- Upgrade Failed—Indicates that the firmware upgrade process is failed.
- No Response—Indicates that no response was received from the device during the upgrade process.
