Quick Start—Onboarding APs

This topic describes how to onboard an access point (AP) in HPE Aruba Networking Central.

Important:

Automatic configuration migration from Classic Central group to HPE Aruba Networking Central group is currently not supported.

Prerequisites

Before onboarding an AP, complete the following:

  • Create a new group in Classic Central and make the new group compatible with HPE Aruba Networking Central. For more information, see Groups.

  • Create a new site in HPE Aruba Networking Central. For more information, see Sites.

  • (Optional) Create a user administration profile to set an admin password. For more information, see User Administration Profile.

  • (Optional) Create an AP system profile to set country-code. The default country-code value inherits the site level configuration. For more information, see AP System Profile.

Onboarding Factory Default AP

To onboard a factory default AP, complete the following steps:

  1. Add the factory default AP to HPE GreenLake with subscription and application assignment. For more information, see Onboarding Devices.

  2. Move the factory default AP to the created site. For more information, see Sites.

  3. Move the AP from the default Classic Central group to HPE Aruba Networking Central. For more information, see Moving an AP from Classic Central Group to HPE Aruba Networking Central Group.

  4. Under Network Overview Dashboard page, navigate to the Device Inventory card and click the numerical value under Device Type. The Device Inventory page appears.

  5. In the Device Inventory page, use the search box to filter the AP, select the AP, assign the Device Function to Campus Access Point.

  6. Verify that the device configuration status shows Synchronized on the Health card. For more information, see Verifying Onboarding and Configuration Sync Status.

Onboarding an AP from Classic Central Group to HPE Aruba Networking Central Group

To onboard an AP from the Classic Central group to a new group in HPE Aruba Networking Central, complete the following steps:

  1. Create a new group in Classic Central and make the new group compatible with HPE Aruba Networking Central. For more information, see Groups.

    If the AP is already assigned to the created site, perform step 4. If the AP is not assigned to the created site, perform step 2.

  2. Create a new site in HPE Aruba Networking Central. For more information, see Sites.

  3. Move the AP to the created site. For more information, see Sites.

  4. Move the AP from the current Classic Central group to HPE Aruba Networking Central group. For more information, see Moving an AP from Classic Central Group to HPE Aruba Networking Central Group.

  5. Under Network Overview Dashboard page in HPE Aruba Networking Central, navigate to the Device Inventory card and click the numerical value under Device Type. The Device Inventory page appears.

  6. In the Device Inventory page, use the search box to filter the AP, select the AP, assign the Device Function to Campus Access Point.

  7. Verify that the device configuration status shows Synchronized on the Health card. For more information, see Verifying Onboarding and Configuration Sync Status.

Moving an AP from Classic Central Group to HPE Aruba Networking Central Group

To migrate APs managed in the Classic Central group to a new group in HPE Aruba Networking Central, complete the following steps:

  1. In HPE Aruba Networking Central, click Classic Central toggle located at the top right corner to navigate to Classic Central.

  2. In Classic Central, set the filter to Global.

  3. Navigate to Maintain > Organization.

  4. On the Network Structure tab, click on the Groups tile.

  5. Expand the group that houses the AP(s) you want to move.

  6. Select the desired devices and click on the Move devices icon.

  7. Choose the Destination Group from the dropdown list.

    Note:

    Ensure that the Destination Group already exists in HPE Aruba Networking Central group.

  8. Click Move.

Sample Connectivity Configurations

The following sample configuration is automatically imported into HPE Aruba Networking Central during onboarding:

Note:
  • Any static IP address configured on the AP under the Interface VLAN will be removed when moving the AP to the HPE Aruba Networking Central group. In the HPE Aruba Networking Central group, static IP configuration must be set under the AP Uplink Profile.

  • Any PPPoE, Wi-Fi uplink, or modem configuration applied directly on the AP will be removed when moving the AP to the HPE Aruba Networking Central group.

Verifying Onboarding and Configuration Sync Status

To verify the onboarding status, complete the following steps:

  1. Under Network Overview Dashboard page, navigate to the Device Inventory card and click the numerical value under Device Type.

  2. Use the search box to locate device by mac-address, serial number or IP address under the Name column. To navigate to the Device NOC page, click the device name.

  3. Verify Configuration Status on the Health card.
