Open Locate

The Open Locate feature enables and provides highly accurate Location Coordination Information (LCI) using the Wi-Fi network.

Open Locate supports 6 GHz Wi-Fi spectrum. The AP-615, AP-605H, and AP-605R AP platforms support Open Locate functionality. These AP platforms can utilize Open Locate even if the 80 MHz channel bandwidth is not enabled on their 5 GHz radio.

The following features support Open Locate in Classic Central 2.5.7 for all 500 Series and 600 Series access points running ArubaOS 10.5.0.0 or higher versions:

Note:

Open Locate receives the FTM telemetry data only from APs that operate in at least 80 MHz channel bandwidth. Hence, it is mandatory to enable at minimum the 80 MHz channel bandwidth, otherwise Open Locate does not work.

  • Manual provision of AP coordinates (latitude, longitude, altitude, and uncertainties)

  • AP Location through LCI exchanges

  • Fine Time Measurements (FTM) ranging responses to clients

  • AP-to-AP FTM ranging measurements

Note:
  • The Open Locate feature is supported in Classic Central for APs running ArubaOS 10.5.0.0 or higher versions. The Floorplan Manager and AP Auto Placement features are currently supported in HPE Aruba Networking Central only.

  • The feature to determine individual AP location via GPS is supported as allowlisted feature to specific customers.

  • It is only available on ArubaOS and 600 Series access points.

For AP Auto Placement to work in HPE Aruba Networking Central, the following Open Locate settings must be enabled:

  • Enable access point automatic placement

  • Send access point location through Wi-Fi

Note:

The Open Locate settings are not available on the HPE Aruba Networking Central, but can be found in Classic Central 2.5.7 for ArubaOS 10.5.0.0 deployments under the Access Points > Services menu.

Known Issues

Following are the known Open Locate issues in the current release:

  • In some cases, there might be some discrepancy in AP location accuracy and might not meet user expectation. This feature is undergoing active development and we expect the accuracy to improve over time.

  • Auto-placement of APs will fail if the selected anchor points are placed in a straight line. This issue occurs as the algorithm faces difficulty to determine the correct orientation of the APs- in the network.

  • Auto anchor AP placement on the floorplan requires you to verify and confirm the location of the anchor APs before initiating the auto AP placement for the rest of the APs. This is by design and might not be required when the precision of the anchor AP placement improves in the future releases.
