Viewing Wired Switch Clients in List View

The switch clients list view allows you to view a list of all the clients associated with the selected switch. The list view also provides options to filter the clients based on the connectivity status, connectivity type. Additionally, you can also customize the columns displayed in the list view.

Chatty Client Status

Wired client status messages sent from an AOS-CX switch to HPE Aruba Networking Central are throttled when a client disconnects frequently (8 times within an hour) or generates excessive updates (40 within an hour). Such clients are classified as chatty, and their subscription-based updates are suppressed to reduce cloud load from high churn. However, periodic polling updates (every 30 minutes) continue to be processed.

A client remains in the chatty state for 4 hours, during which the unified client list is refreshed only once every 30 minutes with the latest status. After 4 hours, the client automatically exits the chatty state, and normal subscription and polling updates resume—unless the threshold is exceeded again.

Maximum Clients Supported per Switch

Each AOS-CX switch can support up to 500 clients. The Clients tab displays only the first 500 clients, based on the order in which client information is received from the switch.

Maximum Clients Supported per Switch Port

Each individual switch port supports a maximum of 25 clients. If the number of connected clients exceeds this limit, none of the clients are displayed for that port.

To navigate to the Clients page, complete the following steps:

  1. In the HPE Aruba Networking Central landing page, select a site from the Sites menu.

    Alternatively, you can click the expand icon on the Sites menu to search for a site from the list.

    The site dashboard is displayed with the network and connectivity information for the site.

  2. Click Network.

    The Unified Device List (UDL) view is displayed for the site.

  3. Select a switch from the Any or the Switches tab.

    The switch dashboard is displayed.

  4. Click Clients.

    The List view of clients associated with the switch is displayed.

Column

Description

Name

Displays the client health indicators, client name, and client status. The client health indicators are:

  • —Client is in good experience.

  • —Client is in fair experience.

  • —Client is in poor experience.

  • —Client is offline.

The client status can be:

  • Connected

  • Disconnected

  • Failed

  • Connecting

  • Blocked

Type

Displays the client type. For clients connected to a switch, this value will always be Wired.

MAC Address

Displays the MAC address of the client.

IP Address

Displays the IP address of the client.

VLAN

Displays the VLAN of the device to which the client is connected to.

WLAN

Displays the WLAN of the device to which the client is connected to.

Connected To

Displays the name of the switch that the client is connected to and the port number. You can click on the switch to view the switch dashboard.

Role

Displays the role assigned this client.

Last Seen

Timestamp when the client was last connected to the switch. This field displays a value only when the client status is Disconnected, Failed, or Blocked.

Tag

Displays the tag assigned the client.

Tunneling

Displays the client mechanism used to segment traffic between a client and a gateway.

  • None — Displays client traffic is not tunneled.

  • Overlay — Displays client traffic uses over tunnel.

  • Port-based — Displays client traffic uses Port-Based Tunneling (PBT).

  • User-based — Displays client traffic uses User-Based Tunneling (UBT).

Category

Displays the category assigned the client.

Function

Displays the device functioning for the client.

Vendor

Displays the name of the vendor running for the client.

Model/OS

Displays the name of the Model/OS supported in the client.

Important Points About Switch Clients List View

The HPE Aruba Networking Central does not show the clients in the following cases:

  • The MAC address exists on a lag interface with an LLDP neighbor entry.

  • The MAC address exists on an interface where there is an LLDP neighbor entry with Bridge, Router, or WLAN capabilities.

  • The interface is detected as a Multi MAC port (Multi MAC-in a single interface more than 25 Mac address learned).

    Note:

    However, a device is displayed as a Connected client until the device is detected as an LLDP. Once detected, the device is moved to the switch’s neighbor section and displayed as Disconnected client in the Clients page. After 30 days, the device is removed from the Clients table.
