Using the AOS-CX Switch Troubleshooter

HPE Aruba Networking Central offers the following tests designed to help you diagnose and fix issues related to AOS-CX switch connectivity:

Note:
  • You can currently perform troubleshooting test for standalone and stack switches only.

  • All the listed tests can be scheduled to run periodically using the Repeat option.

Ping Test

The Ping test transmits a series of ICMP echo packets to the specified destination's DNS hostname or IP address from the selected device. This quick and reliable test assesses the Latency and Packet Loss between your network and the target device, which helps to identify potential network connectivity issues.

To perform ping test on an AOS-CX switch, complete the following steps:

  1. Under Test, select the Ping radio button.

    The Source field is automatically populated with the selected AOS-CX switch name.

  2. In the Destination field, enter the hostname or IP address.

  3. Click Start Test.

    The Results panel on the right displays the test output.

Additional settings

Additional settings are optional, and allow the administrator to input advanced parameters to develop a precise test.

Ping test for AOS-CX switches allow the following settings:

  • Use Management Interface—toggle switch to use VRF management interface. This is disabled by default.

    Note:

    The Use Management Interface parameter is available only for AOS-CX switches.

  • VRF Name— enter the VRF details.

  • Packet Size— in bytes (10-2000)

    • Identifies issues like fragmentation, latency, and packet loss that may not surface with default settings.

  • Packet Count— number of probes to send (1-100)

    • Ensures precise control over the test's duration and consistency, enabling repeatable and measurable diagnostics. It helps in identifying intermittent issues and analyzing performance trends.

  • Repeat— Enter how many pings should run in a specified time period.

The Results panel contains the following details:

  • Summary Icon—The following table describes the meaning of icons used in the test result.

    Successfully completed—All requests passed successfully.

    Failed—All requests failed.

  • Output Parameters—The following parameters are displayed in the test result:

    • Source—The AOS-CX switch name.

    • Destination—The hostname or IP address of the destination.

    • Packet Loss—Percentage of packet loss generated by the test.

    • Average Round Trip—Total round trip time generated by the test.

  • Line chart—Displays the round trip time over the selected source and destination in milliseconds. Hover over the chart to view the round trip details.

Traceroute Test

The Traceroute test tracks the packets routed from a network host and provides the data path from the source to the destination. This test visualizes the route and any delays encountered along the way.

To perform traceroute test on an AOS-CX switch, complete the following steps:

  1. Under Test, select the Traceroute radio button.

  2. The Source field is automatically populated with the selected AOS-CX switch name.

  3. In the Destination field, enter the hostname or IP address.

  4. Click Start Test.
    The Results panel on the right displays the test output.

Additional settings

Traceroute test for AOS-CX switches allow the following settings:

The Results panel contains the following details:

  • Output Parameters—The following parameters are displayed in the test result:

    • Source—The AOS-CX switch name.

    • Destination—The hostname or IP address of the destination.

      If you enter a destination that cannot be reached within 10 minutes, the test fails automatically.

    • Host—A single hop or a list of hops indicating the order the packets travel through these devices.

      Note:
      • The Results panel displays the hops only when probe response is received within 10 minutes.

      • Connector lines between hops and clicking on hops are not supported in this release.

    • Latency—The time delay experienced at each hop.

PoE Bounce Test

The Power over Ethernet (PoE) Bounce test temporarily disables PoE on a port for a specific duration and then restarts the PoE enabled port and the device that is either connected to the PoE port or powered by it. This can be useful to remotely reboot a connected PoE-powered device.

To perform PoE Bounce test on an AOS-CX switch, complete the following steps:

  1. Under Test, select the PoE Bounce radio button.

    The Source field is automatically populated with the selected AOS-CX switch name.

  2. In the Ports field, enter the port number and/or port ranges.

    Note:

    Multiple ports or port number range are not supported in this release.

  3. Optionally, schedule the tests periodically using the Repeat field.

  4. Click Start Test.

    The Results panel on the right displays the test output.

Port Bounce Test

The Port Bounce test briefly disables and re-enables a device interface. This can be useful to reset the network connection for a client connected on the device port.

To perform Port Bounce test on an AOS-CX switch, complete the following steps:

  1. Under Test, select the Port Bounce radio button.

    The Source field is automatically populated with the selected AOS-CX switch name.

  2. In the Ports field, enter the port number and/or port ranges.

    Note:

    Multiple ports or port number range are not supported in this release.

  3. Optionally, schedule the tests periodically using the Repeat field.

  4. Click Start Test.

    The Results panel on the right displays the test output.

ARP Table Test

This test discovers the MAC address of a connected device based on its known IP address and displays the mapping between IP address and MAC address of the device.

To perform Address Resolution Protocol (ARP) table test on an AOS-CX switch, complete the following steps:

  1. Under Test, select the Additional tests radio button.

    ARP Table is automatically populated in the additional test field.

  2. Optionally, schedule the tests periodically using the Repeat field.

  3. Click Start Test.

    The Results panel on the right displays the test output.

Cable Test

Performing a cable test helps identify physical connectivity issues, such as damaged cables or faulty ports, which can cause network disruptions.

To perform cable test on an AOS-CX switch, complete the following steps:

  1. Under Test, select the Cable Test radio button.

    The Source field is automatically populated with the selected AOS-CX switch name.

  2. In the Port field, select the port number.

  3. Optionally, schedule the tests periodically using the Repeat field.

  4. Click Start Test.

    The Results panel on the right displays the test output.

The Results panel contains the following details:

  • Summary Icon—The following table describes the meaning of icons used in the test result.

    Successfully completed—All the ports tested have good cables.

    Partially failed—At least one port tested has a good cable.

    Failed—None of the ports tested have good cables.

  • Output Parameters—The following parameters are displayed in the test result:

    • Source—The AOS-S switch name.

    • PortPort number.
  • Status Filter—The following parameters are displayed in the status filter:

    • Good—Selects the ports where all the pairs have a “Good” status.

    • Partial—Selects the ports where at least one pair has a “Good” status.

    • Failed—Selects the ports where the device could not run the tests.

    • Poor—Selects the ports that have pairs with any of the other statuses, namely Open, Short, Inter-Short, High/Low Impedance, Failed or Undefined.

AAA Test

AAA/Radius server test checks the connectivity and functionality of the authentication process. It is crucial to ensure that users can be authenticated before gaining access to the network. It ensures the radius server can correctly verify user credentials, like usernames and passwords.

To perform AAA test on a AOS-CX switch, complete the following steps:

  1. Under Test, select the Additional tests radio button.

  2. Select AAA Test from the drop-down.

  3. Under Authentication Method, choose from the below options:

    • chap

    • pap

  4. In the Radius Server IP field, enter the IP of the radius server.

  5. Enter the Username and Password.

  6. Under Show Additional Settings, enter the Radius Server Port and VRF Name if required.

  7. Optionally, schedule the tests periodically using the Repeat field.

  8. Click Start Test.

    The Results panel on the right displays the test output.

MAC Table Test

To perform MAC Table test on an AOS-CX switch, complete the following steps:

  1. Under Test, select the Additional tests radio button.

    ARP Table is automatically populated in the additional test field.

  2. Select the MAC Table radio button.

  3. Under Vlan Interface, choose the required Vlan interface option.

  4. Click the Show Additional Settings drop-down.

  5. Under From, choose from the below options:

    • Dynamic

    • Static

    • Port Access Security

    • EVPN

    Note:

    EVPN option is not available for 4100i, 6000, 6100, and 6200 switches.

  6. In the MAC Address field, enter the MAC address.

  7. Optionally, schedule the tests periodically using the Repeat field.

  8. Click Start Test.

    The Results panel on the right displays the test output.

Route Table Test

To perform Route Table test on an AOS-CX switch, complete the following steps:

  1. Under Test, select the Additional tests radio button.

    Route Table is automatically populated in the additional test field.

  2. Click the Show Additional Settings drop-down.

  3. In the VRF Name field, enter the VRF name.

  4. In the Prefix field, enter the required prefix.

  5. Under Route Origin, choose from the below options:

    • Static

    • Local

    • RIP

    • BGP

    • OSPF

    • DHCP

  6. Under Route Type, choose from the below options:

    • External BGP

    • Internal BGP

    • VPN

    • EVPN

    • OSPF Internal area

  7. Optionally, schedule the tests periodically using the Repeat field.

  8. Click Start Test.

    The Results panel on the right displays the test output.

Note:

Routes are not retrieved from the route table test when the route count of the device exceeds 102,000.
