Troubleshooting Tools

The HPE Aruba Networking Central application provides network administrators and authorized users with a set of diagnostic tools to troubleshoot network, device, and client issues efficiently.

Troubleshooting tools can be accessed from the following contexts:

Site Dashboard

  1. In the HPE Aruba Networking Central landing page, select a site from the Sites menu.

    Alternatively, you can click the expand icon on the Sites menu to search for a site from the list.

    The site dashboard is displayed along with site health, device, and client information.

  2. To troubleshoot devices or clients, complete the following procedures as necessary:

    • To view the troubleshoot page for devices, complete the following steps:

      1. Click Network.

        The Unified Device List (UDL) view is displayed for the site.

      2. From the Devices table in list view, click anywhere on the particular device row under Any or device tab.

        The selected device panel is displayed on the left.

      3. From the Devices table in list view, select the device on which you want to perform the troubleshooting test.

        The selected device context page is displayed.

    • To view the troubleshoot page for clients, complete the following steps:

      1. Click Clients.

        The Unified Clients List (UCL) view is displayed for the site.

      2. From the Clients table in list view, click anywhere on the particular client row.

        The selected client panel is displayed on the left.

      3. From the Clients table in list view, select the client on which you want to perform the troubleshooting test.

        The selected client context page is displayed.

  3. Click the troubleshooting icon.
    The Troubleshoot page is displayed and the Tests tab is selected by default in the left panel.

Device Side Panel

  1. From the Devices table in list view, select the device on which you want to perform the troubleshooting test.

    The selected device context page is displayed.

  2. Click the icon.
    The Troubleshoot page is displayed for the device, and the Tests tab is selected by default in the left panel.

Device Dashboard

  1. From the Devices table in list view, click anywhere on the particular device row under Any or device tab.

    The selected device panel is displayed on the left.

  2. From the Devices table in list view, select the device on which you want to perform the troubleshooting test.

    The selected device context page is displayed.

  3. Click the troubleshooting icon.
    The Troubleshoot page is displayed for the device, and the Tests tab is selected by default in the left panel.

Client Side Panel

  1. From the Clients table in list view, click anywhere on the particular client row.

    The selected device panel is displayed on the left.

  2. From the Clients table in list view, select the device on which you want to perform the troubleshooting test.

    The selected device context page is displayed.

  3. Click the troubleshooting icon.
    The Troubleshoot page is displayed for the device, and the Tests tab is selected by default in the left panel.

Client Dashboard

To access the Troubleshoot page, complete the following steps:

  1. From the Clients table in list view, select a client to open the client context page.

    The selected client context page is displayed. The troubleshooting icon is displayed below the client name.

  2. From the Clients table in list view, click anywhere on the particular client row under a client tab.

    The selected client context panel is displayed on the left that contains the troubleshooting icon.

  3. From the Clients table in list view, hover on the particular client on which you want to perform the troubleshooting test.

    The troubleshooting icon is displayed.

  4. Click the troubleshooting icon.
    The Troubleshoot page for the device opens with the Tests tab selected by default, displaying Destination Type as Client and pre-filled with the client's IP address. The History tab includes past session information from site or device contexts that include the Client.

On the Troubleshoot page, you can access the following tabs:

Note:

Users can add notes for each session by clicking the note icon.

Tests

The Tests tab offers a suite of diagnostic tools designed to identify and resolve network or device issues.

You can run diagnostic checks on the following types of devices managed by HPE Aruba Networking Central:

Note:
  • Test results are only displayed once a test run is complete.

  • To view the test output in the Results panel, you can click the graphical result icon for a visual representation or the CLI result icon for CLI output.

  • Users can select up to 10 devices from the Device drop-down menu. Device-specific tests like PoE Bounce, and Port Bounce, and tests with firmware limitation are unavailable when multiple devices are selected. The Source Interface down-down menu is also unavailable when multiple devices are selected.

  • Diagnostic checks are only available for online devices in HPE Aruba Networking Central.

  • Users fail to delete devices by executing the API delete call.

Remote Console

The Remote Console tab service allows SSH access in the browser to devices with privileged administrator credentials.

To perform a remote console service implementation on a device, complete the following steps:

  1. Click the troubleshooting icon.

    The Troubleshoot page is displayed for the device, and the Tests tab is selected by default in the left panel.

  2. Under Remote Console, enter the Username and Password.

  3. Click Start Session.

    The Console panel on the right displays an interactive command line interface.

  4. Click the expand icon Console panel to view the panel in full screen.

    You can choose a second session from the drop-down menu. Alternatively, you can start a new session by selecting the New Session option.

  5. Click History tab to view and download the past remote console sessions.
    The Export option in the session window is enabled once the session is ended.

The following image shows a Remote Console Session on the device.

The Results panel contains the following details:

  • Summary Icon—The following table describes the meaning of icons used in the test result.

Note:
  • Alternatively, Remote Console service can also be accessed through site context by following the same steps.

  • Maximum 10 Remote Console sessions can be run across devices in site context and up to 2 session per device context.

Live Monitoring

The Live Monitoring tab enables users to run live packet captures and event streams on managed devices enabling an in-depth look into communications between devices and their clients.

The Live Monitoring tab offers live categories:

  • Live Connectivity Performance—Live Connectivity Performance is available on APs with radios enabled in Client Access mode. For more information, see Live Connectivity Performance.

Commands

The Commands tab enables users to run diagnostic and troubleshooting commands on managed devices, enabling advanced network health checks through categorized and individual commands.

If you have read permission, you can use view/search and execute show commands. You need write permission to create or delete saved lists.

Commands run in the past can be viewed in the History tab by applying the required Filters.

Note:

A maximum 20 commands can be run at a time per device context.

Firewall Sessions

The Firewall Sessions tab lists incoming and outgoing traffic in a managed network and acts as an investigative resource for users to track blocked sessions within the network. The Firewall dashboard provides a detailed summary of all blocked sessions on the gateway, aggregated based on source IP, destination IP, destination port, and protocol. It also logs the blocked sessions which are sent from the gateways connected in the network. It enables you to audit, verify, and analyze the effects of your firewall rules. You can view firewall sessions for the following devices:

Support Logs

The Support Logs tab provides details of the logs collected from devices for a particular site. This service helps streamline and centralize the process of collecting logs from devices, especially after crashes or unexpected behavior. It also simplifies the process of retrieving log files for troubleshooting.

The following table describes the parameters in the Support Logs table:

Column

Description

Device

Displays the name of the device.

Device Type

Displays the type of the device. The following devices types are supported:

  • Access Point
  • Gateway

File Type

Displays the log type. The following log types are available for download:

  • Tech Support Log
  • Crash Log

Recurrence

Displays the recurrence frequency of the logs. The following recurrence frequencies are available:

  • Once (Now)
  • Once (Later)

Note: Only the Once (Now) collection frequency is supported.

Status

Displays the status of log. The following statuses are displayed:

  • Completed
  • Failed
  • In-progress

Collection Time

Displays the date and time that the logs were collected.

Size

Displays the size of the log file.

Username

Displays the username used to generate the log.

Note:

The support logs in the device context only display File Type, Recurrence, Status, Collection Time, Size, and Username.

You can delete or download an individual log file from the table. To delete or download the log file, complete the following steps:

  1. Hover over a device in the table.

  2. Complete either or both of the following steps as required:

    • Click the delete icon next to the username to delete the log file.

    • Click the download icon next to the username to download the log file.

Table Utilities for Support Logs

You can search, filter, sort, customize the visibility of the site, and adjust the width of the columns displayed in the table, as required.

  • Search bar: You can search for the log of a particular device in the table (not case-sensitive). Type the name of the device in the search bar, and the results are displayed in the table.

  • Filters: You can filter the data in the table. To filter the data, complete the following steps:

    1. Click the filter icon.

      The Filters pop-up window is displayed.

    2. Select the criteria under Status, File Type, and Device Type, and click Apply.

      The filtered data is displayed in the table.

      Click Clear to clear the selection. Click Cancel to exit the pop-up window.

  • Collect Log Files: You can collect log files for a selected device type, if you have write permissions.

    To collect the log files, complete the following steps:

    1. Click the Collect Log Files tile.

      The Collect Log Files side panel is displayed.

    2. Perform the following actions:

      • Device Type — Select the device type from the Device Type list.

      • Device — Select a device from the drop-down list.

      • File Type — Select the file type from the File Type list.

        Note:

        For access points, only the Tech Support Log is available for download.

      • Destination — The destination field is disabled because only cloud logs are supported.

      • Collection Frequency — Select Once (Now) or Once (Later) from the Collection Frequency list. The Once (Later) option allows you to schedule a log-collection time for a future date and time.

        Note:

        Only the Once (Now) collection frequency is supported.

      • Click Collect.

        The log file will be displayed in the Support Logs table, where you can either download or delete it.

        Click Cancel to exit the Collect Log Files side panel.

  • Table Menu: You can customize the table. To customize the visibility of the columns, complete the following steps:

    1. Click the table menu icon.

      The Actions menu is displayed.

    2. Click Customize Columns.

      The Customize Columns pop-up window is displayed.

    3. Complete either or both of the following steps as required:

      • Select the column names to enable or disable the visibility of that column in the table.

        Note:

        The Device, Device Type, and File Type are locked and cannot be enabled or disabled.

      • Click and hold the action icon next to the column you want to move, and drag it to a new position.

      You can click Reset to Defaults to clear your column visibility settings. Click Cancel to exit the Customize Columns pop-up window

    4. Click Apply.

      The adjusted columns are displayed in the table.

  • Adjust columns: You can adjust the column width in the table. To adjust the width of the columns, complete the following steps:

    1. Hover over the left or right edge of the column that you want to adjust.

      You can identify the edge of the column when the mouse pointer changes to the adjust shape.

    2. Click and drag the edge to adjust the width of the column.

  • You can click Reset Column Sizes in the Actions menu to reset the column widths.

History

The History tab provides the details of troubleshooting tests performed in the past. Users can click the individual session IDs to get complete details of the tests.

Tests performed by users are automatically saved in the History tab. Users can click the individual session IDs to get complete details of the tests.

Click Actions to Export or Email the session details from the History tab. Users can add up to 100 email IDs by comma separated input.

Reboot a Device

Reboot a device using the device context panel on the dashboard or the Unified Device List page.

Note:

Launch Troubleshooter and actions cannot be performed on a device when it is offline.

Using the Device Context Panel

Using the device context panel, you can only reboot devices one at a time. To reboot a device, complete the following steps:

  1. In the HPE Aruba Networking Central device context panel, click the ellipsis icon located next to the Troubleshooter button. Alternatively, you can select the respective device from the Universal Device List (UDL) and click the ellipsis icon to view the Reboot option.

    Note:
    • Ellipsis icon is visible only if the device is online.

    • If device is online but it is running some troubleshooting actions, the device reboots after clearing the queue immediately.

  2. Click Reboot to restart the device.

    A pop-up to confirm device reboot is displayed.

  3. Click Reboot Device.

    The device reboots.

Using Unified Device List

Use the Unified Device List page to initiate bulk reboot actions. To initiate bulk reboot actions, complete the following steps:

  1. Navigate to the Unified Device List by selecting a site and clicking Network.

  2. Select all the target devices to reboot or locate.

  3. Click Reboot.

    • If all the devices are online with no troubleshooting actions taking place, the reboot is initiated.

    • If some devices are offline, they are listed in a pop-up. You will be prompted to initiate the reboot on the selected online devices.

    • If all the devices are offline or the devices are of mixed types, the Reboot button is not displayed.

    • If device is online but it is running some troubleshooting actions, the device reboots immediately after clearing the queue.

Locate a Device

Locate a device using the device context panel on the dashboard or the Unified Device List page.

Note:

Launch Troubleshooter and actions cannot be performed on a device when it is offline.

Using the Device Context Panel

Using the device context panel, you can only locate devices one at a time. To locate a device, complete the following steps:

  1. In the HPE Aruba Networking Central Solar System view, click the ellipsis icon located next to the Troubleshooter button.

    Note:
    • Ellipsis icon is visible only if the device is online.

    • If device is online but it is running some troubleshooting actions, the device locate action is initiated after clearing the queue immediately.

  2. Click Locate Device to locate the device.
    The LEDs on the device blink for 60 seconds.

  3. The Locating Device message is displayed and closes when LEDs stop blinking or the notification is closed manually.

  4. Click on the action to initiate the action.

    If the device is already restarting or being located, the action button becomes disabled because the action cannot be performed at that time.

Enable Debug Log to Cloud

Enable Debug log to cloud using the device context panel on the dashboard or the Unified Device List page.

Note:

Launch Troubleshooter and actions cannot be performed on a device when it is offline.

Using the Device Context Panel

Use Debug log to cloud option when you are troubleshooting connectivity or management issues between the access point and the HPE Aruba Networking Central.

To enable Debug log to cloud option, complete the following steps:

  1. In the HPE Aruba Networking Central Solar System view, click the ellipsis icon located next to the Troubleshooter button.

    Note:
    • Ellipsis icon is visible only if the device is online.

    • If device is online but it is running some troubleshooting actions, the debug log to cloud is enabled after clearing the queue immediately.

  2. Click Debug log to cloud to enable the debug log to cloud.

    Pop-up is displayed.

  3. Select the time interval for which the log needs to be enables and click Enable.

    The debug log to cloud is enabled for the specified interval.

Following are few of the commands can be enabled using the Debug log to cloud option:

  • show log state-to-cloud

  • show log stats-to-cloud

  • show log event-to-cloud
