Basic Diagnostics
Orchestrator routinely checks the health of your network. If problems occur during this check, consider performing the following diagnostic procedures before calling Support.
NOTE: Alternatively, you can perform ping, traceroute, and packet capture (tcpdump) from the command line interface (CLI). Access the CLI by either right-clicking an appliance in the Orchestrator appliance tree, and then selecting CLI Session, or by opening an SSH session to the appliance.
Ping and Traceroute
The ping and traceroute commands can assist you in diagnosing network connectivity problems.
-
Ping—By default, all pings are sourced from the mgmt0 interface. To troubleshoot from the actual source interface, initiate pings using the
-Iflag to test connectivity along the data path between different locations. -
Traceroute—Traces the route that packets take to a destination. This command can identify high latency along paths or broken paths where traffic stops.
NOTE: For traceroute, some intermediate routers do not always respond. In some cases, firewall rules or other device configurations can block responses.
To perform a ping or traceroute:
-
Right-click an appliance in the appliance tree, and then select Appliance Manager.
-
In Appliance Manager, navigate to Maintenance > Tools > Ping / Traceroute.
The Ping/Traceroute page opens.
-
Under Network Connectivity, click Ping or Traceroute, and then specify information relevant to the ping or traceroute you want to perform. For detailed guidance, click the help icon.
-
Click Start.
The Output area provides ping or traceroute results.
Performance Testing
You can conduct performance testing from the appliance itself. The link integrity test measures the integrity (that is, the amount of loss) and throughput of your WAN link for debugging purposes. Select two appliances from the appliance tree, and then navigate to Administration > Tools > Link Integrity Test. For details about running this test, see Link Integrity Test.
CAUTION: This test impacts performance. Use it only when necessary.
Packet Capture
You can run packet capture for up to five appliances. Capture files are in standard PCAP format, which Wireshark can easily read. Select one to five appliances, and then navigate to Support > Technical Assistance > Packet Capture. For details about running packet capture, see Packet Capture.
