Mist

Orchestrator > HPE Integration Services > Mist

Orchestrator release 9.7.2 integrates EdgeConnect SD-WAN appliances into the Mist cloud as a supported WAN Edge device. This initial integration phase includes the following functionality:

  • Onboard EdgeConnect appliances into Mist using the Adopt WAN Edge method.

  • Monitor EdgeConnect appliances within your Mist-managed infrastructure without alternating between Orchestrator and Mist.

  • Use the Mist capabilities applicable to EdgeConnect, including Insights, Service Level Experiences (SLEs), Security Events, Marvis AI, and Premium Analytics.

NOTE: EdgeConnect appliances are currently managed in Orchestrator and can be monitored in both Mist and Orchestrator.

Prerequisites

Before you onboard an EdgeConnect appliance in Mist, ensure the following conditions are met:

  • EdgeConnect appliances have EdgeConnect OS (ECOS) 9.7.2.0 or later installed.

  • Orchestrator has release 9.7.2 or later installed.

  • A WAN Assurance subscription has been activated in the Mist Organization. See Activate a Subscription. To understand how your EdgeConnect appliance aligns to its WAN Assurance Subscription class, see Subscriptions for EdgeConnect Gateways.

  • Configure a Site in Mist for your EdgeConnect appliance(s), if one doesn’t already exist. You should create one site for each EdgeConnect appliance, or one site for each EdgeConnect HA pair.

Onboard EdgeConnect in Mist

Onboarding EdgeConnect appliances in Mist is a three-step process:

  1. Add the registration code to Orchestrator using one of the following methods:

  2. Enable WAN Assurance in Orchestrator

  3. Assign the EdgeConnect Appliance to a Site in Mist

Add the Registration Code to Orchestrator

To add EdgeConnect appliances to Mist, you must have a Mist registration code saved in Orchestrator. The registration code enables WAN Assurance for the appliance. There are two methods for adding the registration code in Orchestrator and onboarding EdgeConnect appliances in Mist:

Use Automation to Add the Registration Code to Orchestrator

  1. Log in to Orchestrator as an admin or a user with administrator privileges.

  2. Navigate to Orchestrator > HPE Integration Services > Mist.

  3. Click Add EdgeConnect to Mist and select Mist Organization from the drop-down list.

The Sign in to Mist Cloud dialog box opens.

  4. Enter the email address you use to sign in to your Mist cloud account and click Next.

  5. Select the Mist cloud environment to sign into and click Next.

  6. Enter the password for your Mist cloud account and click Sign in.

  7. If you have two-factor authentication enabled, enter the authentication code you received from your authenticator application and click Verify.

  8. Select the organization within your Mist cloud account that you want to add the EdgeConnect appliance to.

  9. Click Save.

  10. Click Close. Continue to Enable WAN Assurance in Orchestrator.

Manually Add the Registration Code to Orchestrator

Complete the following steps to obtain the registration code in Mist:

  1. On the Mist portal, from the left menu, navigate to Organization > Inventory > WAN Edges.

  2. Select the EdgeConnect appliance you want to onboard by selecting the check box to the left.

  3. Click the Adopt WAN Edges button on the Inventory page. This is where you obtain the code to enter into Orchestrator.

NOTE: The “Claim Code or QR Code” method of claiming process in Mist does not exist for EdgeConnect today.

  4. In the WAN Edge Adoption pop-up window, select the EdgeConnect radio button.

  5. Copy the code (this will be pasted into Orchestrator in the next steps).

Complete the following steps to add the registration code in Orchestrator:

  1. Log in to Orchestrator as an admin or a user with administrator privileges.

  2. Navigate to Orchestrator > HPE Integration Services > Mist.

  3. Click Add EdgeConnect to Mist and select Registration code from the drop-down list.

    The Registration dialog box opens.

  4. Enter the registration code you obtained from Mist.

  5. Click Save. Continue to Enable WAN Assurance in Orchestrator.

Enable WAN Assurance in Orchestrator

  1. From the appliance tree, select the appliances to onboard in Mist.

  2. Click Enable WAN Assurance to begin the onboarding process in Mist.

  3. To view details and progress about the onboarding process for an appliance, click the info icon (i) in the Details column.

The Device details dialog box opens. It outlines the tasks in the onboarding process. When a task in the onboarding process is completed, a check mark appears next to it. When all onboarding tasks are completed, the message Enabled appears at the top of the dialog box.

  4. Click X to close the Device details dialog box.

The Status column for the appliance now shows Ready for Site Assignment in Mist.

Assign the EdgeConnect Appliance to a Site in Mist

  1. Return to the Mist portal. From the left menu, navigate to Organization > Inventory, and you should see the “unassigned” EdgeConnect appliance listed.

  2. Assign the EdgeConnect appliance to a site by selecting the check box to the left of it, then select More > Assign to Site.

NOTE: You should assign one EdgeConnect appliance per site, or one EdgeConnect HA pair per site.

  3. In the pop-up window, select the site to assign the EdgeConnect appliance to, then click Assign to Site.

The appliance should now display a site in the Site column in the Mist inventory.

NOTE: After assigning an EdgeConnect appliance to a site in Mist, verify the status of the EdgeConnect appliance in Orchestrator by navigating to Orchestrator > HPE Integration Services > Mist. The appliance status should show Connected.

Disable WAN Assurance in Orchestrator

You can disable an EdgeConnect appliance in Orchestrator in order to stop the connection to Mist, which stops the telemetry flow.

  1. Navigate to Orchestrator > HPE Integration Services > Mist.

  2. Select the check box for the EdgeConnect appliance you want to disable.

  3. Click Disable WAN Assurance.

NOTE: This step does not “release” the appliance from the Mist inventory, but is a required first step if you want to release an EdgeConnect appliance from the Mist organization, which releases the subscription from the appliance. See the Release a Device from a Mist Organization documentation.

Release a WAN Edge Device from a Mist Organization

If you need to fully remove an EdgeConnect appliance from Mist, you can do so by using the Release workflow.

NOTE: For EdgeConnect appliances, you must Disable WAN Assurance in Orchestrator before you can release the appliance from the Mist organization.

  1. On the Mist portal, from the left menu, navigate to Organization > Inventory > WAN Edges.

  2. Select the check box to the left of the WAN Edge device you want to release.

  3. Click More > Release.

  4. Follow the on-screen prompts to complete the action.

  5. After you’ve released the appliance from Mist, in Orchestrator, navigate to Orchestrator > HPE Integration Services > Mist to verify that the appliance was successfully released.

  6. In the Details column for the appliance, click the info icon (i) to open the Device details dialog box.

If the appliance is fully released from the Mist organization, no information about the appliance appears in the Device details dialog box (for example, you should not see an appliance ID).

If information about the appliance appears in the dialog box, it is still assigned to a Mist organization. Use the EdgeConnect CLI to fully release the appliance:

    1. Access the CLI by either right-clicking an appliance in the Orchestrator appliance tree, and then selecting CLI Session, or by opening an SSH session to the appliance.

    2. Enter en to enable the CLI.

    3. Enter config terminal

    4. Enter hpe-integration mist release

    5. To verify that the appliance was successfully released, click the info icon (i) to open the Device details dialog box. Confirm that the appliance information is no longer present.

This removes (deletes) the appliance from the Mist organization’s inventory, and as a result, appliance information is no longer displayed. This action also releases the subscription from the appliance.

Monitor Mist Connections in Orchestrator

After you successfully onboard EdgeConnect appliances in Mist, you can monitor appliances in Mist or use the Mist tab in Orchestrator to:

  • Disable WAN Assurance for an appliance that has been onboarded to Mist.

  • Verify that an appliance remains connected to Mist.

The following table describes the columns shown on the Mist tab.
